Monzamedia - Day 25 (Final Day)

Fri 25th:
Have to have 2 layouts, 2 colour options and a cover designed before the end of the day. I finished off the tweaking of the design and got started on layout, once that was done I got the cover designed and sent two options to the client before the end of the day.

Although my internship is done, Matt offered me the opportunity to carry on working during the holidays and during college throughout the year.

Monzamedia - Day 23/24

Wed 23rd:
Got feedback from the client today of which logo they chose and was given a new brief to design a brochure for the catalogue which is being worked on at the moment. Played around with some ideas, showed Matt, and we discussed what would work and what doesn’t.

Thu 24th:
I worked more on the brochure design today which Donato is also working on as he is doing his own design. I finished the design to a point when Matt wanted to see. There were a few things that needed tweaking and we discussed colour options as well. I felt the pressure today.

Mozamedia - Day 21/22

Mon 21st:
Had a much better day today, got many other ideas for the logo, and Matt seemed happy with the choices. I had to, before the end of the day, choose the 4 I liked the best and we sat down and compared them to the ones I hadn’t chosen.

Tue 22nd:
I had to finish the logo today and get an image sent off to the client with options so they can choose the final one. I sat with Matt and we discussed a few things and by 4o’clock we had 3 logo options with 3 colour choices i.e. 9 choices. We then sent the options to the client.

Monzamedia - Day 18

Fri 18th:
I did one or two touch ups on the car vinyl, but had mostly a frustrating day today. Most of the ideas for the logo I did have were not working and I wasn’t getting many ideas to start with. Because of this it felt like a long day.

Monzamedia - Day 16/17

Wed 16th:
More tweaking on the car vinyl design, and I start coming up with some ideas for the logo design.

Thu 17th:
Finished the design on the car today and got the Freehand and Photoshop file finalised. Sent the images to the client and worked on the logo design some more.

Monzamedia - Day 15

Tue 15th:
Worked more on the car vinyl design, created another optional bullet hole, tried to make it work but it just wasn’t.

We eventually opted for more of a simple approach where we took the logo and placed that large on the side of the car.

I also had to take this design and wrap it on a picture of the car they will be using in Photoshop.

Monzamedia - Day 14

Mon 14th:
Finished college on Friday and am back at Monzamedia.

I get told that I might get to design a logo for a range of products in a catalogue sometime that week. My first bit of work I get to do is a car vinyl design. The main design was already done by Donato and I had to try and make one element on the side of the car look like its coming out of a bullet hole.

I also get told that the one site they were working on before is up and running and I see that the animation I worked on is on there as well which is pretty cool.

Spier

This was a desing project we did, where we had to design a poster for the Spier Contemporary Art Exibition.

We had to choose an artist from the exhibtion and emulate his/her style with our own piece. The above being my result.

Art History - Nouveau

We wrote our art history exam yesterday and I chose Art Nouveau as my subject choice.

I emulated an artist by the name of Si Scott, as he was my choice of modern artist/designer where I took inspiration from as far as styling went.

It is a wine label design, and I hoped it would make the wine bottle more valuable if the design was actually on the bottle itself and not on a label on the bottle.

Anyway, check out some of Si Scotts work here... http://www.siscottstudio.com/

Monzamedia - Day 11/12/13

This week I had to do minor touch ups on the gecko animation, and just finish it off properly.

Day 11:
Worked on creating a seperate part of the animation for the gecko to animate between the long take, just to break up the monotony if ever there was.

Day12:
Got feedback from the client today, Matt told me that they really liked the animation.

Day13:
Spent the day talking to Donato as it was my last day till holidays, and we went through some flash programes, talked about my new brief, and he showed me a few cool shortcuts in photoshop that we were not told about at college.

I sent an email to matt on the Friday of that week to let him know when I'll be coming back to intern full time...

Monzamedia - Day 8/9/10

Well I finished the vector art today, only had a bit to do, and then got back to work on the animation. I spent the next 3 days working on this as I was told by the end of day10 I must have the gecko doing a full loop, touch ups and that will come later but we just need to get him walking in a full circle so the timing of the animation can therefore be determined, what he is going to do and when. I've used about 120 frames for the animation.

Day8:
Worked on him walking on the top towards the left off the screen, slow progress made...

Day9:
Worked on him settling back into place from the bottom, worked faster as I'm getting the hang of the movement.

Day10:
Finished off the walking off and onto screen, got the full loop done. Tail needs work and character elements need to be developed, i.e. breathing, stopping, maybe catching a fly.

By the end of this week I was drained, dealines at college became a bit more diffcult to juggle...time is but so scarce.

Monzamedia - Day 6/7

Day6:
Got given part2 of the Gecko brief...Its a flash website and Donato wants me to build the artwork he developed in Photoshop, in Flash, in vector (try to keep up:)

I wasn't sure I had the skills to do this yet and was a bit apprehensive, but I gave it a go anyway. I actually ended up surprising myself and also taught myself how to build really cool vector objects in Flash.

Day7:
Worked on building the bigger content areas today and finished the smaller icons. I'm happy with what i've learned and also with the result. I now look forward to using vector in future briefs.

All in all a good week...

Monzamedia - Day 5

Started with the Gecko frame by frame animation today, took me awhile to get my head into the workings of how a gecko walks and had to do research into how best to make it move.

The first challenge was to get him into a position whereby I could start working with it with ease, Donato helped me abit with some ideas behind the movement. No deadline was given to me as yet and so I just got workin...

Monzamedia - Day 4

Day four and the logo has to be finished by the end of the day. Matt and I sat down together, he gave me a crit and there were a few extra things I need to do as well.

I have to have four different options of the logo with the plane yellow and four options with the plane white, have it layed out ready for presentation with variations in the slogon type. Above is the option that Matt and I agreed was the logo that we thought worked the best. I had one hour to get all the above finished.

I got another brief today from Donato. He wants me to animate a gecko in flash for a website which is a logo for a company...yikes, but cool! I think it's gona be tricky but we'll see...

until next week monday...

Monzamedia - Day 2/3

Day2:
So it's monday and I get an official brief as to what I need to do and what the client and Monzamedia are looking for. As mentioned before they are looking for an aeroplane icon to go with their existing logo. I got to work straight away as the reseach was done last week wednesday.

Day3:
I did some further work on the logo today and am nearly finished. I was left alone most of the day but did get alot of help form Donato, he knows his stuff and has some really good simple ideas that tend to work well. I can already see that I am learning from this experience.

Above is an evolution of the planes I designed from 1-4.

Today I felt the fatigue from juggling college and my internship.

Monzamedia - Day 1

Ok so I started my internship at Monzamedia on the 28th and got introduced to the guys...Matt, Donato and Dane. The vibe feels good so far and I feel pretty comfortable within the environment. The rules were laid down firstly and also what is expected of me, after the formalities I got to work.

My first day involved doing some basic research on existing storage companys and their logos. I was told that I would be designing a logo for a company in Cape Town as they wanted to extend the existing one they had with a pictorial element, an aeroplane.

I spent 3 hours from 2-5pm there and will be doing just that on a monday to wednesday after college.

The future of fine watchmaking

We had to create 2 banner ads and a website with 2 working pages based on a brand of our choice. Urwerk is the brand I chose, here is their site...www.urwerk.com

Above is a close up of one of their watches called the Blackbird, and below that is an example of what the home page of the site that I designed looks like. I plan to still add some content on the left to balance it more.

7 Deadly sins & the Crane

Our brief was to choose one of the 7 deadly sins and do an illustration based on it. We also had to place the sin name within our illustration as well.

I Didn't want to use people to communicate the message and rather personified 2 dung beetles to portray my message...

This illustration was a class exercise where we had 2 hours to scamp, live-trace, and colour a character of our own design, the result of which is above.

Class Tutorials

The above tutorial uses a technique called Displacement Mapping to place an image, type or whatever you want in an environment in such a way that it looks like is belongs to said environment.

eg. We took a graffiti piece and made it look as if it was part of the wall, even though it is a seperate image. The graffiti takes on and molds itself around the bricks and their indents.

Another tutorial done was creating the effect of using a Tilt Shift Lens on an image in photoshop. The overall effect is one that makes an image look as if it is a miniture scale model of a building, people, cars, etc.

Non-destructive editing

We had to find an online tutorial that showed us how to edit in photoshop using non-destructive methods. I found a tutorial that showed various types of this editing, the result of which is the rusty red car with the green background...i likes!

Keeping up with time

About a month and a half ago I got an idea...to build a clock, and not just any clock, a Gandfather clock. So I gave my Grandfather a call (as his hobby is carpentry) and asked if he would be keen to take on the challenge. He was.

I then put a design on paper, fairly modern to say the least, and presented it to my Grandfather. We talked about it, what would work etc. and did a final draft with measurements.

All in all, it took about a week to construct and I think it turned out pretty well.

I am quite proud of it and therefore felt like sharing it with you...

Fifa 2010 PropaG Poster

Well here is my propaganda poster design for our Creative Design class. I chose the Fifa 2010 one as you can see, and am fairly happy with the result but also mildly unsure...?

Maybe cause a few people don't get it, but i suppose that means they just gota stay in touch with the news in the world a bit more.

It's a good feeling though to have the first brief near completion well into the second week of College.

http://www.saizenmedia.com/nightwish/

I found this website quite awhile ago and thought i'd share it with you, i think it's really pretty which to say the least is an understatement...

local isn't lekker

Ok, so I've been doing some thinking as to what I'm really trying to say with the propoganda posters that we have to design, and I think I'm gona take the slant of showing the 2010 SA Fifa WC in a negative light (being the anger and dissapointment felt by South Africans caused by our country importing products from overseas, instead of supporting local communities, etc.).

As a result my campaing of sorts will be about supporting local brands/communities/companies.

Now the two ideas that I feel would communicate my message well are either the "from pissed off to kick off" one or the "proudly imported" one. The first I suppose is looking more at the upset caused by importing products and the result of which, and the second is focusing more on the country that we are importing from.

Anys, if you have any comments or thoughts that you'd like to share with me, please feel free to do so...

a new birth

2nd day back at CityVarsity 2010, and already a new task has been set...create a blog.
An easy enough task you might say, but as the year goes on I'm sure our pink-gray-matter-stuffs will do well to forget we even started this.

Memory failure aside, I welcome you to my blog and hope that this year offers more than enough posts filled with amaZING inspirational sumthings!
